Andrew Garrison Pro

Garrison is an independent filmmaker working in documentary and fiction. He co-founded a documentary production and distribution group with Julia Reichert and six other friends who worked together over a decade in Dayton, OH. He then moved to rural Kentucky to work as a producer/director and D.P. with Appalshop Films for a dozen years. He recently retired from teaching production at The University of Texas at Austin, and is an emeritus professor. He continues to work on his own films and working for other filmmakers as a production sound recordist and a sound editor/designer. Current project is BECAUSE I'M HERE (becauseimhere.com) about a devoutly Christian, queer, Black, musician, dancer, coal miner, and essential community member in the mountains of rural Virginia.

His work has earned Guggenheim, AFI, Rockefeller [NVR], and NEA fellowships. Garrison is a member of the Cinema Audio Society as a production mixer and a former member of IATSE Local 52 in the Sound Dept. His previous three films premiered at SXSW.

His films celebrate the extraordinary in ordinary people participating in community at an intersection of arts, social justice, and imagination. “Trash Dance,” (2012) is the only documentary to have won the Audience Award for Best Feature at both Full Frame and AFI/Silverdocs.
