Bio
Ines Sommer is a Chicago-based filmmaker, film programmer, and educator, who is drawn to stories about humans and nature, public rituals, politics, rural life, and history. Often rooted in the Midwest, her films range from observational and character-driven documentaries to essay films, experimental projects, and installations. Her directing credits include the MacArthur Foundation-supported grassroots democracy documentary Count Me In and the award-winning Seasons of Change on Henry's Farm. Her latest project The Hills, about the toxic legacy of the steel industry on Chicago's Southeast Side, currently streams via PBS station WTTW's website. In addition to directing/producing, Ines also has extensive experience as a cinematographer for award-winning broadcast documentaries for Chicago production companies Kartemquin Films, Kindling Group, and many others. Ines has also long organized public events, ranging from film series and festivals to Doc Chicago, an annual mini-conference and monthly meet-ups for regional documentary filmmakers. Ines teaches fulltime at Northwestern University.
