- Synopsis
Cuba's cigar factory 'readers' have been educating and entertaining cigar makers since the late 1800s. Born of illiterate tobacco workers' eagerness to have daily news read to them, the readers evolved into lecturers of sorts, giving factory-floor poetry readings and narration of literary classics. An endangered species, some readers, like Juan, have become troubadours who no longer talk in prose.
