Synopsis

Gagliano Aterno, a small Italian town of just 250 residents in the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo — part of the Sirentina mountain community — has become a pioneer in the development of an Energy Community. Embracing ecological and energy transition, the town sparked a process of territorial repopulation and the birth of new social and economic initiatives.

Like many other villages in Italy’s so-called “inner areas,” Gagliano had steadily lost nearly 80% of its population. The 2009 L’Aquila earthquake left 60% of its homes uninhabitable, worsening the decline. But in recent years, something has changed. The tide has turned, and thanks to a series of forward-thinking projects led by a young new mayor, the town has begun to breathe again.

Produced with the support of Associazione Chiamale Storie and Fondazione Cariplo, with executive production by Michele Pinto and Giovanni Zuradelli.
