Synopsis

Can art be a tool to fight the mafia and reclaim places scarred by crime?
Are the photographs that captured those tragic moments journalism, art, or history?

From Tony Gentile’s iconic photo of Falcone and Borsellino sharing a smile — which inspired the mural overlooking the Palermo seafront by street artists Rosk and Loste — to Il Branco by Velasco Vitali, a travelling metaphorical installation made from waste materials of illegal construction, and Seme d’Arancia by Emilio Isgrò, created for his homeland and immortalized by the lens of Ferdinando Scianna.

Thirty years after the deaths of judges Falcone and Borsellino, and forty years after the murders of La Torre and General Dalla Chiesa, this documentary explores how art becomes a symbol of beauty and freedom for civil society and for all those who share the struggle against the mafia.
