Overview

Synopsis

Before Allende, before Fidel, before Grenada, there was Cheddi.
Cheddi Jagan was the first Marxist democratically elected leader elected in the Western Hemisphere 1953.

Born in rural Guyana, educated at Howard and Northwestern Universities in the United States where he would meet his wife, Janet. Returning to Guyana they would dedicate their lives to the upliftment of the Guyanese people.

After winning the first elections in 1953 held under universal adult suffrage, Cheddi and his Progressive Peoples Party would see their government suspended by a British coup after 133 days.

Bitter divisions, Cold War Politics, racial violence, CIA plots all conspired to bring down one man’s fight for the freedom of his people.

The Price of Love: Cheddi Jagan features interviews from his children, Joey and Nadira, Sister Babara, political rival Hamilton Green and many comrades who knew him well tell his story alongside archival footage featuring Cheddi, Janet Jagan and Forbes Burnham.
