- Synopsis
Born in Tokyo, Yuriko (Lily) survived the Great Kanto Earthquake, only to be sold into servitude when her father suddenly died and left his widow with 5 young children. When Yuriko was finally freed from her work contract, WWII was just beginning. Forced to run to bomb shelters in order to avoid B-29’s dropped by the U.S., she ended up married to an African American soldier and moving to segregated Texas in the 1950’s. With no long distance calls, no international flights, nor any other Japanese to communicate with, she endured racism and a hostile environment with just her two young, mixed-race children for company.
