Overview
- Synopsis
Uterine Fibroids are benign tumors that grow on, around or inside the uterus. Fibroids have both physical side effects and mental health side effects that occur from uncontrollable symptoms. Over 80% of black women will have problematic fibroids by age 50. For one woman, uterine fibroid tumors nearly ended her life. Her diagnosis in 2008 would mark the beginning of fifteen years of treatments, surgeries, pain, endometriosis, cysts, infertility, miscarriage and eventually, the Intensive Care Unit. The film follows her fibroid journey over 5 years as she lives through the emotional and physical effects of this debilitating reproductive disease. We follow her as she undergoes multiple treatments for fibroids and survives the repercussions from years of invasive surgeries. Our film crew goes on a 5 year search for answers about the origin of these tumors and why they target black women. Could the answers lie in Ancient Egypt, slave plantations of the south or chemical products of today?
