- Synopsis
1946 is a revolutionary new film that chronicles how the misuse of a single word changed the course of modern history.
1946: THE MISTRANSLATION THAT SHIFTED CULTURE is a new documentary film that investigates how the word “homosexual” was incorrectly entered into the Bible, and the grave consequences its had on religion, culture, politics and the LGBTQIA+ community over the last century.
1946 is a feature documentary film that will tell the story of two intrepid researchers, Kathy Baldock, a conservative straight Christian LGBTQIA+ activist, and Ed Oxford, a conservative gay Christian graduate of Talbot seminary, who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement within the American conservative Christian church to an erroneous mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. What has been discovered along the way has the potential to profoundly change the language of inclusion within the Christian church and better the lives, not just of LGBTQIA+ Christians, but all who love and respect them.

Researchers, Kathy Baldock and Ed Oxford are currently in the process of writing, FORGING A SACRED WEAPON: HOW THE BIBLE BECAME ANTI-GAY, uncovering the creation of anti-gay theology in America and analyzing how the Bible has been weaponized against LGBTQIA+ people.
In the course of their research, Kathy and Ed were led to Yale University in 2017 where they combed through the archives of the committee charged with creating a new translation of the Holy Bible in 1929. That new version of the Bible would come to be called the Revised Standard Version (R.S.V.), and it would become the first version of the Bible in any language to include the word “homosexual.”
In response to the R.S.V. translation team combining two words, “malakoi”and “arsenokoitai” in the original Greek to form “homosexual,” Kathy and Ed found a letter from, a then 21 year-old seminary student, “David S.” who strongly challenged the team for their “serious weakness in translation.”
“I write this letter after many months of serious thought and hard work, partly to point out that which to me is a serious weakness in translation, but more because of my deep concern for those who are wronged and slandered by the incorrect usage of this word. Since this is a Holy Book of Scripture sacred to the Christians, I am the more deeply concerned because well meaning and sincere, but misinformed and misguided people (those among the clergy not excluded) may use this Revised Standard Version as a sacred weapon, not in fact for the purification of the church, but in fact for injustice against a defenseless minority group which includes the sincere, convicted spiritually reborn Christian who has discovered himself to be of homosexual inclination from the time of his memory. I write this letter with certain homosexual individuals in mind - Christans who would die for their faith, their church, and their lord but who cannot alter their biological state of being. I hope that the committee responsible for considering any possible corrections or revisions of the R.S.V. text may take my case here presented into consideration.”
Miraculously, this letter and other correspondence between David S. and the head of the R.S.V. translation committee, Dr. Luther Weigle, profoundly moved the Doctor and he ultimately agreed with the contemplative student. The R.S.V. translation team replaced the word “homosexual” in 1st Corinthians 6:9-10 to “sexual perverts.” Unfortunately, due to poor timing and the editor’s contract, the change was not able to take effect in the R.S.V.-Revised until 1971. By then, 25 years had passed, and the damage was done. Three other independent teams were already working on other English Bible translations. Each team used the 1946 R.S.V. containing the mistranslated word "homosexual" as a main source text; ultimately, making it responsible for the spread of the word throughout a multitude of new passages.
In 1973, the American Psychological Association (APA) declassified homosexuality as a mental illness, but in the same year the Pastoral Council Magazine listed homosexuality as a moral disorder. Then came the “Save the Children” initiative founded by Anita Bryant which laid the groundwork to use "homosexual" as a political issue for conservative politicians and religious leaders to gain power! This then led to the misconceptions about the AIDS epidemic and inflamed the modern story of “homosexuality as an abomination.”
These types of biblically based anti-gay campaigns led directly to the creation of “reparative” or “conversion” therapies based on the concept that a personal relationship with God coupled with “gender norms training” could “cure” one of their same-sex attractions. By the 1990’s these ineffective and damaging therapies had become a commercial enterprise, affecting over 800,000 people, despite laws against the practice and condemnation from medical and mental health organizations.
The brutal consequence of this onslaught against the LGBTQIA+ community from our churches, trusted leaders, and ultimately our own families has continued to be a devastating matter of life or death. It is important to note that the heartbreak is not limited to the LGBTQIA+ person alone. Their family members, church communities, and loved ones all suffer the malevolence of the propagation of bad theology.
1946 is not an attack on Christianity, the BIBLE, or God’s Word. It’s an intervention.
1946 will interview experts on both the affirming and non-affirming sides of the debate while telling this traumatic and inspiring story through the compelling personal journeys of committed Christians. They included:
Sharon “Rocky” Roggio – Rocky, the film’s director, was educated by her conservative pastor father to be a devout Christian but when she came out as lesbian their relationship was thrown into a turmoil that continues to this day. Sal Roggio, Rocky‘s father, is currently writing a book on his belief that homosexuality is a sin. His voice will also be featured in the film.
Mary Lambert is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, Christian LGBTQIA+ activist and author. Drawing from her strict Pentecostal upbringing and compassionate nature, Mary is uniquely qualified to address the fundamental Christian right with a grace few are capable of. Lambert shares her benevolent perspective and strenuous journey; as well as blessing the film with her exquisite talents as music supervisor and composer.
“I understand why you feel this way and I understand that you just want to save us. But I am Christian and I’m still good with God. ~ Mary Lambert
Kyle Gattison and Ali Gattison, were a married couple with two beautiful children, living the dream until the day that Gattison crumbled. After years of struggling, as a couple, to “pray the gay away,” they finally decided to honor who God made Kyle Gattison to be…a gay man.” The Gattisons, now having lost 90% of their friends and family, continue to raise their children and support each other under Christ.
Ed Oxford started his journey for biblical truth in a spiral of self-doubt; viewing himself as an abomination in God’s design, worthy of condemnation, worthy of death. Luckily, through Christian peers, diligent research and the help of like-minded
theologians, he uncovered the evidence which dismantles the anti-gay theology, which led him to that dangerous precipice.Ben Carlton - With the mindset that homosexuality is wrong and anyone who has these feelings must be delivered, Ben spent years pleading with God to “take the sin away!” He started an organization, BMe Community , which works to build better communities inspired by black men. He traveled the nation encouraging guys to be their authentic selves, but he wasn’t being his true self. It was a painful journey but he made it through and now, with pride, he is able to say, “I’m black, I’m a minister and I am gay.”
Kimberly and Kai Shappley - Kimberly Shappley is an Evangelical Christian ordained minister, advocacy speaker, Registered Nurse and mother to Kai, her transgender 9-year-old daughter, one of 7 children that make up the Shappley family. Kimberly was a republican that followed the church and fell in line with their position on LGBTQIA+ rights until those beliefs were at first challenged and then undeniably transformed by her then four-year-old daughter.
Ken Fong - AFFIRMING EXPERT
Ken is a former senior pastor at Evergreen Baptist church of Los Angeles. He has earned his MDiv and DMin from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he served as executive director of the Asian American initiative and member of the school of theology faculty. Since 2015 Ken has served as the host and co-producer of “Asian America: The Ken Fong Podcast ,” which has attracted listeners throughout the U.S. and in over 100 countries. He pioneered several cutting-edge ministries, not the least of which was to extend God’s kingdom to AAPI Christians who identify as LGBTQIA+.Sara Cunningham - Straight Christian Ally Founder of Free Mom Hugs. “I’m a Christian mom with a gay kid living in Oklahoma saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. If I don’t fight for my son (and his rights) like my hair is on fire, then who will? It’s time we celebrate our LGBTQIA+ children. And I won’t stop until I no longer hear horror stories from the LGBTQIA+ community and their mothers.”
Free Mom Hugs is a non-profit group of parents who attend LGBTQIA+ events and offer hugs as a show of unconditional acceptance and love. They also provide resources and education for LGBTQIA+ youth, as well as parents, family, faith leaders, education providers and more.
Kathy Baldock - Author, LGBTIA+ advocate, international speaker, educator, and Executive Director
of Canyon Walker Connections. Kathy is a leading expert on LGBTIA+ issues in the United States. Her unique expertise lies in connecting the historical, political, and social dynamics that influence the conservative Christian church’s modern position of discrimination. Her 2014 book, Walking
the Bridgeless Canyon: Repairing the Breach Between the Church and the LGBTIA+ Community, and accompanying "Untangling the Mess" presentations, blog, podcast, and videos, piece together the history behind LGBTIA+ persecution in the church and the need for conservative Christians and church leaders to become better educated in order to properly engage members of the LGBTIA+ community. Baldock’s heavily researched, accessible, informational approach helps people understand the LGBTIA+ community’s modern plight in terms of how threads of culture, medicine, psychoanalysis, law, science, religion, and politics have contributed to our understanding of this group of people.Reverend Davis S. is the author of a recently-discovered letter, written in 1959 to the RSV translation committee, challenging the introduction of the word "homosexual" into the Bible. Because of David’s letter, the committee admitted that the RSV translation was wrong—leading to a change in a later version of the RSV to the more generic phrase “sexual perverts” rather than a specific condemnation of gay people.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT:
“As a lesbian Christian, I have been navigating a religious environment that views me as “other,” “less than,” and “not equal,” for too long. These beliefs, held by many dear to my heart, have cast a dark, dangerous shadow over my life. After years of searching for my voice and calling, my path has led me here. It is my goal to change the Christian narrative and liberate the many LGBTQIA+ people living in the dark and oppressed by bad theology. I want us all to be acknowledged as equals, under God's love. There are truths that must be shared.
We are here to share those truths.”- Sharon "Rocky" Roggio
TOPIC SUMMARY:
The United States is a country that is dangerously polarized, often with one side espousing Christianity as the doctrine which draws the dividing line in the sand. Gay marriage, the freedom to choose and equal rights are all rooted in the teachings and interpretations of the Bible. It was not until 2003 that Lawrence v. Texas made the Levitically-based sodomy laws unconstitutional. It would take another 12 years for the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges to end the ban on same-sex marriage; a ruling that currently hangs in the balance. According to a Gallup poll in 2016, 73.7% of Americans identified as Christians. The Bible, and our modern understanding of it, is present in everything we do. Not only does it affect voters and political elections, but individuals who are seen by this dominant group as “other,” particularly the LGBTQIA+ community.
The 1946 voyage is an ambitious one. The ultimate goal of the film is to become a fundamental resource in the quest for inclusion. We want to provide the LGBTQIA+ community, their parents, siblings, teachers, pastors, clergy and members of the congregation the foundational arguments to end the rejection of a group of people who have been made in God’s image - just like all others.
1946 will become a means to deconstruct bad theology and help to heal the often unreachable self-love the LGBTQIA+ person deserves. We also seek to foster unrelenting doubt in the minds of those who propagate the teaching that the LGBTQIA+ person is an abomination. A doubt that screams, “There is more to this than what we’ve been taught, more than we’ve understood!”
1946 will give the audience a much-needed bird’s-eye view of how the current preaching of scripture has been derived. Where were the points in history that influenced it? What was the political climate, and what were the translators and interpreters of their time thinking?
1946’s filmmaker, Sharon “Rocky” Roggio is no stranger to the implications of a life completely affected by the predominant modern interpretations of the Bible. Growing up lesbian in a traditional patriarchal household with a pastor father has prepared her for this expansive and important undertaking. Rocky’s experience of Biblical teachings, through her father, have been incredibly traumatic. She is a strong voice, among the growing chorus of LGBTQIA+ Christians who want to cure the world of this damaging narrative, and cure it for good.
Rocky’s story is as common as it is profound among the LGBTQIA+ youth of her generation. The following excerpt tells a portion of her raw, painful experience:
“I used to keep a diary in high school - I guarded that thing with my life! After all, it contained my biggest secret. For me, when I had no friends to share my struggles, penning words onto paper became my closest confidant. However, one day, I accidentally forgot it in the backseat of our 1986 Mercury Sable!
By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late – my dad had already read it.
And that is how my father found out that I was a lesbian. To say I felt violated and disrespected is an understatement. I was furious! That was so wrong! How could he do such a thing?? It was my secret to GIVE, not his to TAKE! He approached me with tears, fearing for my eternal salvation. He was angry, confused, and experiencing emotional pain, all at the same time. After all, my father was a highly respected, successful pastor of a large Christian church that adamantly condemned the LGBTQIA+ community. To him I was a rebellious sinner. That hurt. Incredibly! I no longer felt safe at home and moved in with a friend. The only way I would have been allowed to stay at home was if I became straight – but I knew that was not even possible.”As an LGBTQIA+ person, Rocky has been navigating the religious environment that views her as “other” or “less than” and “not equal” for far too long. Now after 20 years, stronger than ever and driven by a purpose greater than herself, she is putting her foot down.
“I refuse to live in the shadows any longer. I want equal participation and rights within the church. As long as sexual orientation and gender identity are categorized as ‘sin’, and people are shamed or have no voice under God’s love, then the Christian church will continue to cause harm to the LGBTQIA+ person.”
This is a human story, full of human emotion, where laughter accompanies our tears, and joy and hope are the true rainbows after the darkest of our storms. With 1946, we will be seeding the notion, the idea, the kernel of a thought, that maybe - just maybe - we got this one wrong. Maybe we did not need to drive our families apart, maybe we did not need our stories to end in death and maybe together we can finally stop this horrifically damaging marginalization and alienation from continuing in God’s name.
Rather than being an exploration in the lives of evangelical parents dealing with their gay children and their communities, 1946 is focused on scripture, revealing the biblical truth that will allow the LGBTQIA+ Christian to exist, without the stigma of sin. It aims to become an invaluable tool, and a much-needed guide that will serve and aid those revealed in executive producer Daniel Karslake’s groundbreaking films, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO (Sundance Premiere 2007) and FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO (Tribeca Premiere 2019).
ARTISTIC APPROACH:
The tone of 1946, is a serious one. Lives hang in the balance, and although the subject of the documentary is dire, there is hope. The damage is reversible. We will journey, with our heroes, through their struggles and challenges, as well as their actualizations, loves and laughter to engage both our audiences' hearts and minds. Ultimately this story is the telling of an adventure, a quest for knowledge, truth and justice; aiming to appeal to both conservatives and liberals alike. Our heroic story will unfold as we follow the individual quests of our key researchers and the paths that led them to converge in the basement of The Yale Divinity School Archives. Paths that led them to become the first in history to discover the why, when, where and how, this mistranslation happened and, ultimately, who had been influential enough to convince the translation team that they had made a mistake. All the while, we will be disrupting the foundations of our historical understanding by contextualizing the rarely discussed profound hand that time, society, culture, and politics have played to lead us to our current cultural stance on homosexuality and the Bible.
1946 is prepared to take our audiences back years, decades, and even centuries until we land in antiquity to answer the basic question of “how did we get here?” By combining expository, observational and participatory documentary styles we will intertwine impactful, visually stimulating and entertaining motion graphics with the heartfelt vulnerabilities of the 1946 cast. We will drive our message home by stylistically, intellectually and emotionally engaging the viewer.
Motion Graphics Look and Feel - The Endless Scare http://motionographer.com/quickie/the-endless-scare/
Most subjects will be interviewed seated, vérité style, and will be conducted with a minimum of two cameras. However, some segments will contain “run-and-gun” style filming for any high-profile subjects in addition to “man-on-the-street,” for general public interviews. All shots will maintain a high quality, cinematic look and feel.
Animation will be used to transport the viewer back to the 1940’s and 1950’s when Rev. David was a young man. This will allow viewers to experience David’s perspective; the isolating experience of feeling like you’re the only gay person in the world, answering the call to ministry, his first reading of the RSV translation with the term “homosexual”, and finally, recreating his penning of the historic letter to Dr. Weigle.
PROJECT STAGE:
At present, 1946 has completed approximately 75% of production and has begun the post-production process. Since the initiation of this project in October 2018, Rocky has chosen a production team and acquired a community of supporters from around the world. Financial accounting to date, 1946 has raised $224K of the total $519K budget. The team of 1946 seeks to complete principal photography by March, 2021, while structuring our off-line edit to be in full post-production by the end of March. Post-production will be completed by end of August, 2021, and ready to submit to top tier festivals for a 2022 premiere.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:
All ages.
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community, including all allies.
Civil Rights Activist & Allies.
Practicing and non-practicing Christians of all denominations, while targeting the rhetoric of the Evangelical Christian Church.1946 will appeal to a wide audience. As we know, the Bible has shaped culture, law, households and societies. It has been used as a powerful tool for unity and as a weapon for division. No life is untouched by it. 1946 aims to take the audience on a personal as well as a historical journey, to contextualize how the bible has helped craft our reality.
Whether one identifies with religion or has no religious affiliation, the issues 1946 will address are based on our collective history and political evolution. Like it or not, religion often lies at the heart of some of our most palpable and divisive cultural complexities. By intertwining emotional interpretive first-person accounts and perspectives with historical biblical evidence, we will inform through both subjection and objection. We will include the resounding voice of the scientific and psychological community, as their role has been profound in shaping and developing our history of human understanding.
1946’s target audience(s) include the Conservative Christian, the LGBTQIA+ christian, the LGBTQIA+ non-christan, the non-affiliated ally, as well as the LGBTQIA+ opposed. It is imperative that our message is heard clearly and spreads far and wide, as we strive to attain the equal human rights deserved by all.
AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT and SOCIAL IMPACT:
1946 is building an audience through social media platforms and outreach in local communities. Through a number of popular social applications, we share important updates, as they unfold, and invite our growing audience to come on the creative journey with us. We involve our audiences first hand. We know, because they have told us, about the positive impact this research has already had on struggling LGBTQA+ Christians and how many more we can reach, together. The 1946 team is individually and collectively cultivating relationships that will help amplify our message.
If truth prevails, the fundamental arguments in 1946 will profoundly influence legislation, policy, and voting choices in America. Our goal is to starve the silence of division by inspiring uncomfortable conversations within families, churches, and communities to ultimately shift religious organizations towards life-saving affirming theology. We intend for the collective 1946 voice to inspire hope manifesting as indelible, domestic and global, change. 1946 will be a major influential reference tool to aid LGBTQIA+, their allies, families, communities and churches towards a bright future of inclusion and equality.
FUNDRAISING STRATEGY:
1946 Producer’s continue to approach LGBTQIA+ organizations, gay Christian organizations, and ally organizations to bring awareness to the project and its needs. Building an audience through social media has been essential to growing our community of supporters and champions. Without it, our crowd-funding momentum would not be where it is today. A GoFundMe campaign was started in August 2020, in order for the production to continue amid COVID and unforeseen global situations. As of the beginning of November 2020, $66k of the $150k goal had been raised. Tax-free contributions are also made through our fiscal sponsor, Women Make Movies. We continue to seek and partner with other media influencers equally concerned with social, religious, and political equity to amplify our message and expand our audience. Through Mary Lambert we will reach out to other celebrity talent for endorsement. 1946 has been featured on a number of podcasts and was recently seen on Amazon Prime’s OUTrageous and the Yass Jesus podcast produced by The Content Group. Our team is actively seeking additional opportunities such as these. We also developed an educational presentation about our film that we offer to organizations, which we presented for L&Q for UK Inclusion week and a regional PFLAG conference. In addition to these efforts, 1946 will also continue to apply for filmmaking grants specific to social justice and people’s empowerment.

WORK SAMPLE:
The submitted proof of concepts (POC) for 1946 gives the viewer insight into the research and discovery of the translation history made by our lead subjects, Kathy Balbock and Ed Oxford. We learn of the young seminarian “David S.” who, in 1959, challenged the translation team on their decision. We highlight some of the devastating results from this mistake while bringing hope as we declare our intent to “do the work” to reverse the damage.
In addition to what is featured in the POC, we will show more in-depth research and history of the clobber passages, the opposition/conservative viewpoint, a medical and scientific perspective, and the history of human sexuality and anti-gay theology, including conversion therapy and the personal stories of those impacted. The final film will have all technical details polished and/or added to enhance the quality of the picture including: finished audio, color correction, professional motion graphics, strong animation segments, supportive historical footage and articles and debates from both the affirming and non-affirming side.
