- Synopsis
From the urban hustle of Beijing to the desolate beauty of rural provinces, their intimate stories unveil the complicated landscape of a woman’s mind — fraught with traditional expectations and social inequity. Although “pursuing one’s dream” is the mantra of many young women, there’s a great discrepancy in the opportunities availability to them under different socioeconomic circumstances.
Crafted with a hybrid style of direct cinema and cinéma vérité, SPILLED WATER engages the viewers with an “a-day-in-the-life” approach as seen through the eyes of director May May Tchao returning to her home country. The film explores how the economic transformation is changing the roles, rights, and social status of China’s women as mothers, wives and daughters.
