The Dragon’s Backbone (or Longji) Rice Terraces Complex is the world’s largest terraced farmland that was not known to the public until the late 70’s. The 27 square miles complex was first constructed 700 years ago. Their ancestors had layout a sustainable foundation that have kept them wealthy for centuries. But since the beginning of this century, many young and adult males have left their villages to look for better opportunities. Longji Rice Terraces were almost run by women. With production activities declined, terraces were abandoned. But Longji is a living landscape, without cultivation activities, it is no different from other mountains! Will this 700-year-old self-contained empire vanish?
